this is the 3rd living language course I've ordered- I speak Spanish fluently and ordered the Spanish version for my parents. I was really pleased with it, so I recommend it to everyone. I ordered the French version for myself and have been super pleased with it also- I have learned a lot, even just using the course on my own. so I thought I would give the Korean version a shot since that language really interests me a lot. I saw it was coming out and preordered it. got it as soon as it was released- arrived quickly. the price was great as always for such an extensive course. I could not be happier!!! the extra book on learning to read and write hangul is something most other courses don't give you- I finished it failry quickly and have been amazed at how quickly ive learned to "read" hangul. I watch a lot of Korean tv shows (with English subtitles) but I have surprised myself now because I can now read the Korean subtitles that come up (I don't understand the meanings of the words yet but I am able to read the Korean with correct pronunciation) I think it gives you a really good basis- like a child learning to read, learning to write, sounds words out, etc. I have now moved on to the first lesson book and am learning quickly. perfect for the price- the series are always in depth, yet simple to understand. very happy and would recommend this to others. p.s. im an ESAL teacher so have experience with language teaching and find the living language method very good. it really works for me, as im a visual person and the reading and writing is what allows the language to "sink in" for me. the cds are also great too and are good for people who learn better by listening.

I learned to read and write Hangul in 5 hours with the reading/writing guide included with this, and I am currently on Lesson 5 of the first book. I really like how their lessons are organized. I'm able to understand things easily, and they explain things that are complicated. However, I have faced MANY typos/mistakes which are undoubtedly confusing to a Korean learner, and I'm only on page 96 (out of 226). I've noticed that sometimes there are extra letters included in the answers in the answer key, and sometimes completely wrong words are included! The book also repeatedly instructs you to "look at the words in the parentheses," but there are no words in parentheses...they're actually referring to the words in italics! I don't know who edited this book, but they did not do a thorough job. Also, the titles of the track listings on the audio CDs do NOT match up with the track titles listed in the book...However, despite these errors, I do find this book useful. Just pay attention and you should be fine. Good luck to all fellow Korean learners out there!

Why...I'm learning Korean while also learning Japanese because my 2 1/2 year old daughter loves Korean music and shows and uses sentences with English, Japanese and Korean and I would like to be able to understand what my little learning sponge is saying when she is telling me about her day or asking about something.I have been looking for a system that teaches grammar as well as the set phrases like Human Japanese does for Japanese so I'm not just regurgitating basic sentences and not understanding half of the response I get in return, but I can have actual conversations with people and a pretty good idea what they are saying. I'm really happy to say that it does. It gets into grammar, particles, sentence topic vs sentence subject, ending verbs, modifiers, set phrases, honorifics, a little about culture and a lot more.Love it, but....I think it would have been better if the reading and writing book came with it's own in depth cd on how to pronounce and examples, but I'm not at a total lose as I put together a playlist to do just that for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWDkz3KSs6g&list=PLmNG7SEza1L4HHQxPmM0-lPNpcpgGYguy. So I can get around that downside easily enough, but I really wish I didn't have to. I suggest going and finding some free videos and making your own playlist that you can play on repeat while you're working with your reading & writing book over just putting disc 1 track 3 on repeat. The language lab on their site has games and things for their 3 main lesson books but not for their reading & writing so again nothing to really help you hear how to say the alphabet so when you read it you know and don't have to hear it. You'll notice with the essential book and cd disc 1 track 3 that the vowels have the same sounds as their names but the constants don't. It helps a little to give you an idea of what their sounds could be. I say could be because constants don't always sound the same they tend to be like tofu and morph pending on what is around them as you find out in your reading & writing book so that's why I'm not too keen on using the disc to figure out how to pronounce them.Another issue is they teach the roman letters for the hangul but don't always use them when they write them out in roman letters instead they write the sounds in roman letters. Like instead of writing g most of the time they will write k and instead of writing u sometimes they will write oo and if it is one of the silent letters like when h is at the end they don't write it at all. There are so many of these though out and even a warning about g being written as k in roman letters that it makes it hard to believe that these are all typos. While it is intentional I don't think that that it is a very well thought out plan when you are teaching people a language. Yes it gives a better idea on how to say it but does nothing for learning the how to read or write the words properly and can even mess you up when saying them and especially on their quizzes when you get the answers wrong because you're writing it out in hangul the way they romanized the sounds. If you are like me you look at the romanized version and write it out then test to see how well you did and vice versa so you can really grasp the language. I think it would have been better if it was written out per character vs per sound that way you can actually grasp the words and their meanings, because some words will have the same sounds but different meanings and different spellings. Again it's easy enough to fix by crossing out what they put and translating it into the roman letters so you are not just learning how to say the words but how write them and read them, but I wish I didn't have to do that. Luckily it stops half way through the Essential book so at least it's not a constant issue, but don't try to learn the hangul spelling from their sound romanization of it.What I think about...Overall...I love the complete edition because it really pulls it all together so you can construct your own sentences and not just your most basic sentences. I'm glad I got the complete edition instead of just the essential book with 3 cd's that I was looking at because the reading & writing book really adds to the essential book and I think is a must. It has a nice flow to the books and they progress along in a way that is understandable and fairly easy. I like that the use of romanization stops about half way through the first book so you don't rely on it and you actually learn hangul. I like the games and things on the site, they are a fun way to help sink in what I learned. I also like the audio discs because ir's not the same person, the whole time so I don't start dozing or tuning it out and it keeps my brain engaged in learning. Each book...I love the Notebook. I think it is a great bonus since I don't have to run out and buy a notebook to keep all my notes or highlight up my books, it's the same height as the books so it won't easily be misplaced and I can pass the books and my notes on to my daughter when she gets older and starts learning more grammatical parts/rules and reasons of languages.I love the Reading & Writing book because it gets into detail about how to pronounce the Korean Alphabet (Hangul) and the stroke order and positioning and is basically the first book and essential to know before you get started because I think it helps one to learn faster.I like that the Essential book flow is easy to follow and breaks the lessons up so that I'm not overloaded learning one subject, like just vocabulary or just grammar for a whole chapter. I like that it starts out with vocabulary then moves on out to grammar and it gives tips, explanations and quizzes through out to help it sink in a little better instead of just doing it at the end of the chapter. I like that the grammar starts out simple and not overloading on how to build the sentence. I like that the vocabulary is not just words but phrases and sentences and gives me something to look at and use for examples when the grammar section comes up.I like that the Intermediate book starts off with a simple review of what you learned in Essential book instead of just moving on or devoting 5 chapters to it. I like that it has the same flow as Essential. Intermediate is where you really start to learn how to build your own sentences and not just modify ones that they give you or just make simple sentences. It introduces more particles, verbs, sentence structure and their importance.I like that the Advanced book again starts out with a short review and then really gets into building more complex sentences, phrases, conjugating copula, tenses, modifiers and of course new vocabulary and more so by the end of it you should really understand how it works and hold full conversations with people and be able write proper Korean sentences.

I was excited to receive this order I immediately opened the package and haven't been sorry. I've been working on the books and cds and find this is what I was seeking as It is helping me to learn more of the Korean language. My mother is Korean and never taught me to speak the language. I've been wanting to know more lately and have a lot of free time. I am enjoying the material greatly and have high hopes of being able to understand a conversation in the future.

I really like this product. The audio is a good addition and it really aids in pronunciation. The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating is because there are a loooooooot of typographical errors. As someone who has studied Korean before, I catch them and I'm able to answer correctly because I recognize that it is a typo, but I can't say the same for new Korean students who are learning for the first time. 재민씨...
