Amazon.com Review
Crossing Over reads like a casual conversation with an old childhood pal instead of like a memoir of a world-renowned psychic who has his own talk show on the Sci Fi channel. John Edward's narrative is down-to-earth and filled with vernacular expressions (including plenty of instances of "holy shit!"). There's the story of how his deceased mother finally gave him the three signs he hoped for after she died, and how he once contacted the recently departed songwriter Carl Perkins. Most of the time, Edward speaks about how the process of consulting with a psychic brings peace and reconciliation to those left behind--standard fare for medium memoirs. As compelling as Edward's stories are, what makes this memoir unique is how readily Edward exposes his own vanities and ego bruisings. He also delves into the behind-the-scenes reality of being a television medium. For instance, he reveals how his producers wanted to have dead-people "theme shows"--for instance inviting grieving members of Mother Against Drunk Driving to be the audience. This kind of "gallery rigging" goes against Edward's desire to enter readings without any prior knowledge of the person seated before him. Edward offers an amusing, and at times disturbing, look at how the ethereal world clashes with the celebrity world. --Gail Hudson

I purchased this book shortly after the death of my 18 year old son. The stories in this book helps to give, people who have lost a loved one, hope that they may be able to communicate with their loved ones who have crossed over. Not in the way that John Edward can but in their own way. I talk to my son all the time. Because of what John has written in this book, I believe my son can hear me. I believe he sees what is going on in my life and I know that I am going to be with him again some day. Thank you John Edward for giving me and others a look into the other side.
CROSSING OVER IS A STORY ABOUT HOW THE SHOW CAME TO BE:Crossing over goes into the various situations and developments that made this show possible. From the missteps to the fortune timing that made this show what it is.THIS BOOK ONCE AGAIN CONTAINS JOHN EDWARD'S FRIENDLY BANTER THAT VIEWERS OF THE SHOW AND READERS OF HIS PREVIOUS BOOK WILL RECOGNIZE:The style of this book is pure John Edward. You can almost hear his Long Island accent as he recounts his frustration with the TV people he has to deal with. What comes through loud and clear is quirky sense of humor that is so evident in the show. He has a pleasant way of dealing with people that don't get it; when he is telling them news that isn't packaged quite the way they expected.ONLY A SMALL FRACTION (30%) REALLY GETS INTO THE ART OF HIS TALENT:This book thought it is all about his ability as a medium, it is primarily about the contruction of the tv show and how his particular talent played a part in making this happen. However that aside he does discuss some situations that came up in his other book "One Last Time" in more detail, as well as reveal the signs his mother finally provided him. This aside, I hope he writes another book about situations that continue around the show.IN THIS BOOK YOU CAN SEE HOW PERSONAL A TALENT HE HAS:While reading his book you see over an over, how all-encompassing this work can be from effecting his life choices to realizing his car is missing. This is not merely a job but a calling. Facinating.ALL IN ALL A GOOD BOOK: This book was very interesting, but I found myself wanting more of what makes John Edward famous; his skill as a medium. While he also shows a remarkable talent for capturing his pleasant personality in his writing, I'm afraid the foibles of the TV mechanics don't so much interest me as the personal side of his craft. Mind you I thought it was wonderful that some of the camera men and assistants wound up with reading. This is truly the people side of it. I just don't like to be reminded of the marketing and merchandizing aspect of TV.MANY MISTEPSIn the beginning of his career there were many missteps that bear no relationship to what he does. Marketing nightmares, technical difficulties and journalist entrapments. With so contraversial a topic as mediumship; it is a small miracle that John is the success he is today. It does not take much to tarnish a name and some of the earlier disasters must have felt he was being railroaded into obscurity, courtesy of some marketing/merchandizing mishaps. Don't worry John Edward, the rest of us know, journalist integrity is an oxymoron. Very few of us out here take what we are being spoon fed as gospel.ONE QUESTION:This is something I'm sure John Edward has an answer to. As a interested skeptic who reads alot on this topic of crossing over and then even past lives, is there any negativity that comes back? People like Hitler, Mengele, etc. have all died, does their energy ever come back through mediums? You don't hear much of this. Has anyone reported a past life of horrible deeds?I recognize in the show that John Edward has asked if a person is particularly overbearing or pushy but I have not seen any shows where a really negative person is revealed. However, given the 11PM EST air time, I have seen the show less often than I would like to.It is a great book and I'm waiting for more.
In this book, John recounts his early struggles into show business. He talks about the incredible hurdles he had to go through to create the television show "Crossing Over."As in his first book, John writes about the incredible series of coincidences and synchronicity he experienced. Things just fell into his lap in his quest to create the show. He also gives great insights into his experiences with the nay-sayers, and how they really pounced on him when he became famous. The best thing about John's books are the stories of the people he meets. There were several touching stories; a tragic love story involving an unsolved murder, and how that love between the two people literally broke the barriers of heaven and earth.Another story about a loveable old man named Carl Perkins, who wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" which launched Elvis' career. Carl was a very humble human being who was taken advantage of financially many times, but his passion for life and music lit up all those around him, including his close friend Paul McCartney. There were several other stories, but I remember these two in particular. They are powerful, moving stories that touch upon the very essence of life itself, the reason why we even choose to live: LOVE! Friends and family are the factors that make life worth living, and that's the lesson John tries so earnestly to teach on his show and books.A very moving book, just like "One Last Time." Highly, highly recommended!
I am a years-long fan of John Edward since being fortunate enough to have a private reading with him back in 1999. I've read and loved all his books and most recently this one. It's different from the rest ... here John goes to town with his true personality and details of his struggles to get where he has gotten. No bull. Just honest, straightforward accounts of his experiences both good and bad since deciding to devote his life to mediumship. For me, the book solidified my trust in this man and in the process he brings to us in his TV show. There is a lot of show biz talk and inside info in it, including full names, dates and circumstances, and some of that flew over my head. But there's a reason he has it in there ... brutal, upfront honesty and accuracy. The way he conducts his work is also the way he presents this book. I was so impressed that I ordered a copy for my cousin as well. If you are looking for an intriduction into the afterlife, read his book One Last Time. Once you have the basics down, move on to this book, it really brings everything together.
