I usually love Christy Barritt books. But this one was just not my cup of tea. They call this "romance inspired suspense." The suspense part was fine. The romance part....nearly ruined it for me. The characters were too perfect, too sappy, too self-absorbed. In the middle of life-threatening situations, all they could think about was whether or not it was "safe" to fall in love. Really?! Completely unbelievable, unrelatable, and highly annoying. I skimmed most of it to get to the action parts and very nearly gave up on it altogether.
Just another day and a regular trip to the bank turns deadly for Elle and Mark, the nice gentleman she sees there every week, when two men decide to rob it. As bodies pile up and a cat and mouse game ensues, Elle's father hires Mark to protect her. Nothing makes sense and it takes all Mark can do to keep Elle out of harms way. Losing her is not an option. How many will have to die before they can figure it out? Can they stay alive long enough to deal with the feeling that are growing for them both? This is the first installment of three books in the Security Experts series. Beware! You won't want to put these down!
The story itself was ok , but I found myself continually irritated by the characters of Elle and Mark and even Wendy. The main characters were perfectly beautiful/handsome, accomplished, poised and on and on. Gorgeous, slim, brilliant for Elle and Wendy. Muscular, handsome for Mark. A Yale graduate! Beauty contest winner! Navy SEAL! Please!! Does every main character have to be the model of human perfection? This was a real turnoff for someone who is not a size 4 or 6 or even 8. Come on! Every page the main characters of Elle and Mark are fighting off an intense attraction to each other. It detracted from the story. I found the story itself to be ok for a mindless read, but it didn't reflect reality. For example, the best friend of a character dies and that character isn't floored by grief and shock. A few tears and that's it. I found it nauseating when the senator referred to his adult daughter as "my little girl". I like most of Christy Barritt's books, but I cant recommend this one.
Key Witness is the first in Christy Barritt's Security Expert Series, although one of the main characters, Mark Denton, is introduced in an earlier book, Last Target. Although you don't need to, I went back and read that one first. In Key Witness, Elle Philips witnesses a bank robbery and then all of a sudden, the robbers are trying to kill her. Mark Denton is hired to protect her, and they soon figure out there is a lot more involved than a bank robbery. The thieves seem to have it out for Elle personally. As Mark and Elle try to keep one step ahead of the thieves and try to figure out what on earth is going on, they find themselves attracted to one another. Another suspense-filled, edge of your seat novel by Christy Barritt. A must-read if you like romance and suspense!
This was a great book. Christy's books always suck me in from page 1, and there has never been one that I haven't loved. She truly is a great author! This is the story of Elle Philips, and starts off with a bang as she is an unlucky victim of a bank robbery, certainly being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Her father is in politics and up for re-election and suddenly Elle's life is in danger. In comes Mark Denton to defend. Loved this book. Can't wait to see what happens in book 2! Great job Christy!! :)
Christy Barritt is an excellent Christain suspense author! I read her Squeaky Clean series, and thoroughly enjoyed it.In this book, Ms. Barritt takes her suspense writing up several notches! The action was non-stop with many twists and turns. The main characters are fleshed out and believable.The sweet growing romance was predictable but still endearing. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. HIGHLY RECCOMEND!
