This is a strange world. Long ago a wizard tried to create a human with all the virtues and somehow created spirit versions of the virtues. Of course, this tale has one of those virtues deciding to meddle in the life of a bitter sellsword. The meddling is a bit annoying and the villain has more power than perhaps is necessary. But the villain also is a bit more of the boogieman rather than a direct threat to the hero and his companion.I liked the characters, which was the one thing that made this story shine at all. The plot isn't new or different, and as I said, I found the villain to be less than compelling in a way.Still, it was surprisingly engaging and I'd love to see what happens next

While Aaron Envelar is still looking for those who stole his mother's necklace he must also make a living. His latest job is to find and rescue a Prince of the kingdom who has been kidnapped. The person who hires him is a sister of the Prince. When Aaron arrives just in time to watch the Prince die he knows he won't get the original amount of money he was promised but money is money so he goes to the Princess to give her the bad news.Aaron eventually learns that he must now save the Princess and her companion from the brother who is killing all his siblings so he can be sole heir to the throne. As they run from the people out to kill them Aaron learns that he now has a Virtue hiding in his body. She left the body of the dead Prince and entered Aaron without his knowledge and now because of her he feels something he has never felt before, compassion.I thoroughly enjoyed the characters here, including Co, the Virtue that now must help Aaron survive so that she can too.

I enjoyed the story in this novel and look forward to the rest of the series. BUT ...Surely, there is a sixth-grade English teacher in Georgia who would be willing to correct the grammar and spelling in a short work such as this, and to teach the writer about subjunctive mood, the difference between "lay" and "lie," the instances when "who" should be used instead of "that," the significance of spelling "whose" instead of "who's" (and "lands" versus "land's" and "alliances" versus "alliance's"), the unlikelihood of a Claymore (a Scottish two-handed sword) being a term in this imagined world, the difference between a canoe and a rowboat, and the use of "drug" versus "dragged" (and "run" versus "ran" and "cast" versus "casted" and "bare" versus "bear"). I doubt a sixth-grade teacher could provide the copy-editing necessary to tighten the writing, but flabby sentences abound. Now, if errors like these don't bother you as a reader, it's a fine tale.

This was an interesting story, and I liked the characters. This is one of the few books I've read where the "good guy" doesn't have almost everything go his way and he saves the day easily. Aaron gets injured, badly, and it effects his and his group's quest to stop Belgarin from taking over the Northern territory. I liked the surprise at the end, showing that Aaron may have had more help along the way than he thought. The only thing that marred this book was it's editing. I didn't see much in the way of spelling, but the way the speaking parts were done drove me nuts throughout the whole book. Sometimes it was ," she said. Sometimes it was ," She said. At one point it was ,." She said. Please, stick to one way, and do it correctly. More often, the parts of the sentence preceding the speaking should have been ended with a period, not a comma and then what the character says. For example: Balen nodded, "You're right there...." No... the character nodding does nothing to show the person is going to talk, so there should not be a comma, but a period. I know it's a bit nit picky, but it was hard to keep myself from noticing it every time it happened.Well, despite that rant, I will be proceeding with this series. I need to find out if Aaron and the gang defeat Belgarin.
