While this is a nice book, it's a very small, selective survey. I bought this book for the Kindle since it is no longer in print, and it works rather well as long as you are color enabled. The book includes well-written profiles and beautiful photography for 34 landmark sites from Charleston to the Upcountry. All the landmarks you expect to see in a photo essay like this are here. There are no blatant omissions.The text is purely functional and isn't deeply researched enough to be of much use for a local or architectural historian. It's really intended for a casual reader. The photography is the feature attraction. The lovely color photographs include exteriors, interiors, architectural details and gardens for each site. This is a book to stare at, if not to read.That said, it's definitely worth the $15 Kindle price, but beware the market prices. Being essentially a coffee table book of well-known sites, with little professional appeal, anything more than about $40 for a new hardback would be too much.There's a book similar to this one called PLANTATIONS OF THE LOW COUNTRY, by Baldwin, Baldwin and Iseley, published in 1985. That book is superb, despite its age, and is an excellent companion volume to this one.
We love to travel and visit antebellum homes. This book is very well written with great photos of a very beautiful state. A must for the traveler or armchair traveler.
Relocated to South Carolina and immersed myself in local history. This is an excellent source of info on the gilded age of this area. These Mansions rival Newport RI, but are located in some of the most obscure areas. A must read for any history buff.
I like this book because it combines color photos with a good general history of the homes, and the residents of those homes. It is a great reference book if you plan to visit these homes.
