Keats's Neighborhood: An Ezra Jack Keats Treasury, by Ezra Jack Keats

From Publishers Weekly

Keats's Neighborhood: An Ezra Jack Keats Treasury pays tribute to the life and work of the celebrated children's book creator. An introduction by Anita Silvey puts his books in the context of their time; illustrators such as Jerry Pinkney and Simms Taback describe the influence of Keats's work on children's books in general or their own in particular; and the attractively designed volume concludes with a brief biography. The work offers 10 complete stories (the trim size slightly enlarged from the original) including the Caldecott Medal-winning The Snowy Day (1962); Goggles! (1969), a Caldecott Honor book; and other favorites, such as Whistle for Willie (1964) and Peter's Chair (1967), plus sketches from The Turnip Seed, which Keats was working on at the time of his death in 1983. Photographs, original sketches and drafts round out the presentation. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

About the Author

Ezra Jack Keats (1916–1983) is the Caldecott Medal winning author of The Snowy Day, which broke ground in 1962 as one of the first picture books for young children to portray a realistic, multi-cultural urban setting. Since its initial publication, The Snowy Day has come to be regarded as both a children’s classic and one of the most important picture books ever written/illustrated. Ezra Jack Keats’ legacy lives on in the popularity of his most famous character, Peter—the star of The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie, Peter's Chair, A Letter to Amy, Goggles, and others. This book claims to contain ten complete stories. However, at least one story (The Snowy Day) is missing three of the pictures that were in the original book, and several others are cropped significantly. While the text is complete, I feel that the pictures are an important part of the story in a picture book, especially for a Caldecott-winning artist. Also, prospective buyers may wish to know that the page spreads are not the same as in the original books, with multiple pages condensed into each two-page spread. For example, The Snowy Day is a 28-page book, but in this version it is twelve pages (six two-page spreads). I still think this book is a good value, but I also think it's a little disappointing, and the claim that it's 'complete' is misleading.

I had been looking for children`s stories by Ezra Jack Keats for quite some time. I had bought "A Snowy Day" for my children in the 70`s. Now I have bi-racial grandchildren and was glad to find Keats` stories all under one cover. It is important to provide books whose illustrations can foster identity with my grandchildren. My grandsons are 3 and almost 5 and "race" has not become a source of curiosity. They identify parental figures as "Mom" or "Dad" regardless of color. This is a lesson for all of us and I hope this has a lasting influence in their lives!

When I taught first grade in the suburbs where I had a student tell me, "I saw a black person once!" (it was 25 years ago) I shared these stories with them and it opened up a whole new world to them. I would read a set of these stories, and they would beg for more. Keats is a master storyteller and artist. The pictures are colorful and fun to figure out the collage technique he used. His style is also very distinctive, and children can pick it out when shown a collection of pictures including one of his.I am currently working now with a man in his 40s who is learning how to read, and he remembered Goggles being read to him when he was a little boy. He is enjoying reading these stories because they connect with him in the life he led in the inner city, and faced the same issues Peter did with the bullying older boys.I especially love this book because it is a compilation of ten of the stories, and it traces Peter growing up through his adventures. We are reading Ezra Jack Keats: A Biography With Illustrations along with this book, and it is incredible how much of Keats' personal life is embedded in his stories. His brother Willie became the dog's name. His mother Gussie is the puppet that Louie finds. There are excerpts in between the stories from artists who worked with Keats or knew him or were influenced by him, which further expands understanding about the author/artist.Should I ever return to the primary grades, I know for sure this book will have a key spot on my bookshelf.

Keat's stories are an American Treasure but combined in one volume it's extra lovely. We had different favorites over the years, from the puppy to the blind jazz man. Want your child to have a peek into so many magical lives in the city, this is a great way to share different stories for a rural kid!

Love EJK's books, but agree with some of the other reviewers that the pictures are shrunk.

My 3 year old loves Snowy Day so we got her the collection. She loves it. Fun, short stories.

I am a pre-kinder teacher. I tried to find my copy of "A Snowy Day" and couldn't find it so I ordered this book - sort of as an impulse buy being frustrated I couldn't find my copy from my Mom. This book is a wonderful book and the other teachers at my early learning center want to borrow it. I've also shown it to parents and they like this book too. I like the "notes" from other authors.

I GREW UP WITH EACH INDIVIDUAL STORY HERE. Now I can bring some good literature about my people in a real positive light to the under-served disenfranchised generations today. The author may be gone but his legacy lives on.
