Sometimes you just want to settle in with an old friend and get lost in his world for awhile and it is easy to do with Harry Bosch. The plotting, at least with regards to solving the mystery is clever and full of "where does he go from here and how does he get the information" points that make this series so enjoyable. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is more of a TV script like quality to this one, and I found the principal perp's ability to pull together what was happening based on a few random clues to be a bit improbable but the book held my interest and was an enjoyable read.

Michael Connelly never fails in his Harry Bosch novels. In each one, another little piece of Harry's complex history and personality is revealed. Never one to let proper protocol get in the way of solving a case and bring justice to the victim and their families, Harry latches on to a 20 year old cold case on which he was one of the original investigators. The case arose during the King riots in LA when solving any murder was almost impossible because of their frequency and the chaos that ensued. Not to deterred, Harry persues the case relentlessly as always. Another fantastic read from a master.

aHHH! I am happy to report that Bosch wasn't in front of IAD----well, maybe a little, but it wasn't as boring as his other problems with them. It begins during the early 1990s riots in LA, murders, looting, arson, anarchy. He and his partner go to the scenes, but there are so many calls they can't spend the time to get much information for a case. This particular murder becomes personal and he is determined to find out why a photojournalist from Denmark ends up killed execution style in an alley in LA.Years later he is working Open-Unsolved cases and comes across this particular murder book. It is intriguing and he is determined to follow it through to being solved and give the victim's family closure. It is a strange and convoluted case, but he manages to pluck strings and get to the core which takes him sleuthing from the Iraq war to modern times. The only thing I find disconcerting is that he is involved with different women at different times, gets married to one, but then she's not in the next book. I guess the author forgets his continuity occasionally.

As usual I enjoyed the Harry Bosch character and the plot twists and turns. Michael Connelly did quite an intricate job of moving the story line from the riots in LA in '92 to the distant points in Denmark and the Central Valley more than ten years later. Having grown up in Modesto, CA and having traveled extensively throughout the state, I appreciated the specific landmarks and roads sited in the book. I could feel the story literally moving through the Central Valley and appreciated the flow that brought to it. Felt like I was back "home". I honestly can't say whether it was the local references that I appreciated more, or the cast of characters, all of which feel like they were really local boys to me. But this is one of Michael Connelly's books that I enjoyed reading the most.

This was a wonderful book. Harry Bosch is brought to life by Michael Connelly. The case is 20 years old. A cold case . But, Bosch untangled the mystery of a woman reporter who was raped on a leave from Desert Storm and was killed during the riots in LA by the same man. She was following her leads to find the group of men and she found them and died because of her search. A great book! Read ever Harry Bosch novel and am waiting for the next one!

Unlike most Connelly offerings, The Black Box begins a little slow. What's worse is that it seems to maintain that pacing for more time than it ought.Harry is still Harry, and those who've come to love him will find the old detective as eager as ever to solve cases regardless of what, or who, may be standing in his way. What I found mostly lacking was the momentum that Harry craves, and likewise keeps the reader turning pages.Alternatively, the latter third of this book seems to take on an entirely different pace - driven entirely by Harry's momentum, trademark hunches, and what feels like a rush to wrap up loose ends and conclude the narrative. In doing so, we forced to take an all too predictable turn that comes across less than genuine. It comes to be less about Harry, the character, and more about the action movie sequence that picks up where most of the rest of the book stayed slow. The tensions that had merely begun to simmer seem to explode all too quickly and you're left with a little of 'that's it?' when you reach the conclusion. All in all, worth the read and still entertaining for Bosch and Connelly fans alike, but don't expect the best of the series in this edition.

The Black Box by Michael Connelly was one of the best, if not the best, book written by Connelly in the Bosch series. It was filled with intrigue and detective work both sophisticated and mundane with just the right degree of balance from beginning to end. At the end the book builds to a crescendo of action to the point where one begins to worry that this could be the last Harry Bosch book but Connelly, once again, comes through with a true highly satisfying but surprising ending. The book was a true page turner from beginning to end and my only disappointment was in the fact that, like all good things, it did have to end. I hadn't wanted to buy this or any other book from Amazon for my Kindle until Amazon had stopped using its Kindle customers as hostages in its personal war with the publishers but I broke down and bought this one and I'm really glad I did. It made me happier than ever with Connelly and reminded me that Amazon was doing a very bad thing to its customers by trying to use them to improve its position with its vendors for its own profit purposes. We bought our Kindles from them with the implicit, if not explicit, promise that everything we wanted to purchase and read would be available to us as customers as it was published. Makes one want to check the market more carefully before purchasing thing from Amazon in the future.
