I started reading this book after my husband deployed to Afghanistan for a one year deployment. I had already read a few other military spouse books about what to expect when being a military spouse and other books where wives told stories about how they coped with the military lifestyle and their husband's deployments. Those books were okay, but not for me. Frankly, they just made me feel worse and they are full of sad stories. Don't get me wrong, I feel for these spouses, but those books do not make you feel good when your husband is in a combat zone. Then I ordered Mollie Gross's book and it was just what I needed. I found myself laughing out loud at many of the parts of the book. I especially enjoyed her stories about her grandma Ruby. This book is not a guide book. If you want a guide book and you need help finding a job, go to ACS... or read a guide book! Mollie states clearly that her book is not a guide book. This book is fun and is meant to make you laugh. She touches on some serious issues, but I think her purpose is to make military spouses feel good and find happiness during a deployment and when dealing with stressful things such as PCS moves. I could relate to her on so many levels and she gives good advice about dealing with families, coping with deployments, moving constantly, etc. Don't take it so seriously and have some fun with the book! I can't wait for Mollie's next book to come out.
I'm a longtime military girlfriend, and often we girlfriends/boyfriends get the short end of the stick because our relationship is not recognized by the military. Without the support of the community that is available on base, amongst other wives, or even legal communication, going through deployment feels especially lonely. You definitely do not love your serviceman any less - you have just chosen for both personal reasons not to be married yet. The consequences of which, are extremely unfortunate.So while yes, this book isn't literary genius or necessarily the entire "truth" of what it is like to be married or dating military men. It's significance and merit lives in the important and touching tales of struggle and confusion when confronting this very different lifestyle. Its serious moments, while scattered about, hit home, and HARD. The confusing barrage of emotions that occur when your significant other is suddenly deployed and at risk, is difficult to explain, difficult to predict, and definitely difficult to understand, as it is a very unique situation.I was recommended this book by a Marine wife when my boyfriend was deployed, I was surprised that I felt horrified and heartbroken, confused as to why his shipment felt like a breakup with the potential of never seeing him again. My civilian friends found this completely ridiculous, but upon reading Gross' statement about feeling "unmarried", there is, first, comfort in knowing that you are not crazy! But secondly, she affirms the truth behind the situation (Yes, you are alone. Yes, he can no longer be there for you.) and offers good advice to help pull yourself back together and attempt to bravely face the world.For those who do not have the support of other wives or a military community, Gross will feel like your friend who understands and reassures you, and tries to make you laugh. It's worth it to forgive the less-funny anecdotes considering how golden her words are when it comes to the heartfelt issues.
While a certain amount of what Ms. Gross writes as her experiences were not at all anything remotely resembling those of my own; so much of what she did write about was spot on! Being a Military Wife requires a certain amount of backbone, thick skin, resourcefulness and great portion of humility. Being able to look at your life with her level of frivolity is the way to go. This book is a must read for new military spouses!
This book is fantastic- I highly recommend it to any woman whose loved one is in the armed forces! I've read it so many times, I've lost count- and yet each time I read it, it still makes and smile and laugh like it's the first time. It's not corny or cheesy, and it's not a boring military spouse instructional handbook, either- it's a clever, insightful, and hilarious window into this life that is the Military. I read it when I first started dating my fiance in the Marine Corps, and it was so nice to have a veteran wife's comedic and yet poignant take on what I was about to enter into. A "getting your feet wet" experience for me! I didn't know any other military significant others at the time, and it was comforting to get an insider's perspective on what my future held. And the best part is that over the years, I've encountered and/or seen many of the things Mollie described in her book. Hopefully one day I might meet Mollie during one of our cross-country moves : )
I read this book in just a few days. I had a hard time putting it down because the author is great at pulling you into her world and making you laugh with her (slightly exaggerated) stories. Obviously each viewpoint is unique, and if you are a military wife, your experience might be different from hers. However, as an outsider looking in, I felt I got a peek into a lifestyle I don't know about, and isn't that often the point of reading memoirs? She may not be the "typical" military wife - as some reviewers emphatically say - but I don't recall her claiming to be. This book isn't meant to give the full picture, but rather (to be cliche) just one piece of the puzzle.
